Letter: Hosein can make difficult choices

As a graduate of our university and fellow physician in our community, I am proud to support Dr. Jeremy Hosein for the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
In medicine and public office, competency and character matter. Good decisions require more than good intentions. They require listening, experience, sound judgment and humility. As a neurosurgeon, making difficult decisions with long-term consequences is part of Jeremy's daily life. His experience in public service also gives him a valuable perspective on how institutions can solve complex problems and serve the public interest. I know Jeremy will approach this responsibility with integrity, intellectual curiosity and a commitment to doing what is best for students, faculty, taxpayers and the state we call home.
With the merger of UNL and UNMC, it makes even more sense to have a regent who attended both institutions and understands their distinct missions, their shared strengths and the opportunities to build a stronger, more unified University of Nebraska. Jeremy, as an academic regent, would markedly improve our chances to rejoin the AAU, an important goal for the legitimacy of our university system.
We all know the importance of choosing the right person for a job that matters. I believe Jeremy Hosein is the best choice for regent.
I encourage my fellow Nebraskans to join me in supporting his candidacy.
